V3 Dirt bike helmet

Best dirt bike helmet 2018

When it comes to discussing best dirt bike helmets, it would be uncommon for Fox’s V3 to not be brought up. The V3 makes use of some of the latest and greatest technology to keep your head safe and comfortable when riding your motocross bike. Both professional racers, and just for fun riders will feel at home in one of the 4 different shell sizes that are used for the 6 total sizes offered.

To hold on the visor, Fox uses a unique system that is unlike most traditional visor screws. They have come up with a magnetic visor release system (MVRS). MVRS uses magnets in place of the traditional 3 screws which securely holds up to roost and wind, but will allow the visor to come off in the event of a crash. That is just one of the great features of the 2018 V3.

The ventilation on the V3 is also nothing short of superb. In total there are 14 intake vents and 4 exhaust vents which will help keep you comfortable during even the hottest of race days. While all of that is nice to have, when it comes to helmets, nothing is more important than the safety features. That is why Fox Racing has included the popular MIPS system in their V3 motocross helmet. MPIS is a patented technology that stands for multi-directional impact protection system. It has been engineered with a low friction layer that goes between the riders head and the actual helmet and works to absorb energy that is transferred to the head via angled impacts.

All of this is may sound complicated, but what is important to know is that the V3 is the safest helmet that Fox makes, and it rivals the other top helmets out there for safety. This year the V3 is also features weight savings over the previous generations. At the end of the day, the 2018 Fox V3 is a comfortable, and safe helmet that is suited for even professional riders. There are not many bad comments you can make about it.

Seven MX Dirt Bike Gear 2018

Seven Helmets (Bell) 2018

Bell dirt bike helmet 2018

Seven’s motocross helmets have been designed in collaboration with Bell’s already popular and proven helmets. The styling is unique to Seven MX.

Moto 9 Flex

The Moto 9 Flex is a top of the range motocross helmet. It carries DOT, ECE, and Snell M2015 certifications. So yes, it is very safe. It may carry a hefty price, but the protection of your head is worth it. The shell is made of a carbon composite to help keep the overall weight down.

The impact absorption on this helmet is really something special. There are 3 different layers designed to work together to absorb impacts in a progressive manner. This allows the helmet to absorb low, mid, and high energy impacts with a greater efficiency than the standard single layer of foam which is used in a lot of helmets. You will also find multiple vents to help regulate temperature and keep your head dry.

One more important feature is the Magnefusion Emergency Release System. This is a quick release system that allows for the safe removal of the helmet in the instance of a severe crash. Overall, it is harder to find a better helmet than the Moto 9 Flex. It is very comparable to the Fox V3 that was discussed earlier.

MX-9

The Seven MX-9 helmet is based on the classic Bell MX-9 model. It is a step lower than the Moto 9 and the lower price reflects that. This helmet comes with both DOT and ECE certifications. Unlike the superior Moto 9 though, it misses out on the SNELL certification. The shell on this lid is made out of a polymer composite that is both durable and lightweight. It is very well vented making use of the trademarked velocity flow ventilation system that is similar to what you find on the Moto 9. This helmet is great for beginners and will do a good job of keeping your head safe. However, for anyone who is a serious rider, we recommend a higher end helmet.

Seven Gear Sets 2018

Zero gear set

Zero is Seven’s top of the range gear offering. Here you will find nothing but professional level performance.

Jersey:

Seven’s Zero jerseys come in 2 different forms. There is the regular jersey style (one piece). Then there is a two piece system including a compression jersey and an over jersey on top. The compression jersey is designed to hold your muscles tight so that there is no energy wasted while riding.

It also helps to keep the rider cool. The over jersey is a sleeveless athletic fit design that looks good overtop of the compression jersey. It is extremely lightweight, breathable and ensures 100% freedom of movement. Overall this system works very well. There is even a cold weather compression shirt for those cooler riding days.

Pants:

The Zero pant features an athletic fit similar to the jersey. It is all about being bulk-free and comfortable. The fabric is a 4-way stretch fabric that allows for complete freedom of movement. There is lazer cut vents as well as mesh panels for breathability. This pant is simple, comfortable, and a dream to ride in.

Gloves:

Zero gloves follow the trend of being simple, lightweight and comfortable. They feature media stiches on the thumbs and index fingers for use on touch screens which is a must for a lot of people nowadays. The breathable 4 way stretch fabric helps create a glove that even though most picky of riders seek.

Rival gear set

The Rival dirt bike gear line from Seven is just one step down from the higher end Zero collection. It is a good set of gear for any rider.

Jersey:

Unlike most Zero jerseys, all of the Rival jerseys are a one piece design. They are made with an athletic fit in mind to help prevent bunching and jersey flap. The fabric used for the jersey is a polyester that feels nice on the skin and helps wick moisture away. There are stretch panels added in specific areas throughout the jersey to help with comfort and fit. Lastly, there are lazer cut vents for maximum airflow.

Pants:

The Rival pants are similar to the Zero pants only with a little more weight to them. They feature the same race cut chassis and fitted styling. These pants are quite durable thanks to their polyester construction. There are also multiple air intake panels which help the pants to breathe and ultimately allow for better temperature regulation. There is nothing out of the ordinary about this pant, but it is just plain good.

Gloves:

The Rival gloves from seven are their most popular offering and that is no surprise after looking into them. They feature dual-layered palms which stands up better to wear than the single layered palms found on the Zero gloves. They also feature the same touch screen friendly media stitches on the thumbs and index fingers. There is direct inject finger protection as well as top hand protection. All in all, the Rival gloves from Seven will meet the demands of most riders and racers.

Annex Motocross gear sets

The Annex line is Seven’s lowest level dirt bike gear set. Even so, it offers performance that is much higher than entry level.

Jersey:

There is not much to say about the Annex jersey. It features a nice athletic fit similar to the higher end offerings from Seven. Polyester is used for the construction as it is breathable and relatively lightweight. This is a well-priced, simple motocross jersey.

Pants:

These pants are a pretty standard motocross pant with a very nice fit. They are made of polyester for durability reasons and feature a couple of air intake panels. These pants are a little more bulky than the higher end offerings from Seven which is good for people who aren’t looking for such an athletic fit. The quality look and feel wouldn’t make you think these are budget friendly, that’s for sure!

Gloves:

The Annex gloves are a lightweight glove with an excellent feel. Like the other gloves from Seven they feature the media stiches for use on touch screens. Unfortunately it is only a single layered palm. This feels nice to ride in but wears out much quicker than a double layered palm. It is likely that those who want lightweight gloves will go with the Zero gloves anyway. This is still a nice pair of gloves though considering the price.

Troy Lee Designs Dirt Bike Gear 2018

Troy Lee Designs Helmets 2018

SE 4 Carbon

This helmet from Troy Lee Designs is another top performer in head protection. Thanks to its carbon composite shell it is relatively lightweight at only 1325 grams. Just like the Fox V3, the SE 4 Carbon comes with the MIPS brain protection system to help absorb rotational forces.

There is also an emergency release system for the cheek pads to help with safe helmet removal by EMS responders. This helmet is no heat trap either! It features a mind blowing 21 vents in total to help make sure you stay comfortable and composed while racing and riding your dirt bike. To top it all off this helmet comes loaded with a handful of safety certifications and has been proven to be one of the safest motocross helmets ever.

SE 3 helmet

The SE 3 is one step down from the SE 4 carbon. It makes use of three different foam densities to help absorb the impacts that occur during a crash. It weighs slightly more than the SE 4 Carbon at about 1600 grams. As far as safety certifications go, this helmet comes with SNELL and DOT. Overall, it is a good helmet for the price. However, it does not match the safety levels of the SE 4 Carbon.

Air Motocross helmet

The Air helmet is Troy Lee Designs entry level motocross helmet. It is a very good helmet for beginners as it is relatively safe, it is cost effective, and it only weighs about 1500 grams. You couldn’t ask for more out of an entry level lid.

Troy Lee Designs Gear Sets 2018

SE Air Gear set

SE Air is Troy Lee Designs’ super lightweight and breathable yet durable dirt bike gear set that is exactly what you want when riding on a hot day.

Jersey:

This jersey is all about being as light and breathable as possible while still remaining as tough as nails. It is made with ventilated polyester front and back panels, with polyester mesh sleeves for the ultimate airy feeling. There are also lightweight foam pads attached to the elbows for extra protection. This jersey feels like it isn’t even there but will hold up to multiple crashes and countless hours of riding.

This pant has a nice regular fit. It isn’t too tight and not too lose. There is also multiple stretch panels placed in key areas for free movement. This is a solid breathable pant that will last for countless rides.

Gloves:

The Air gloves are often paired with SE Air as well as GP Air gear. They are made to be as lightweight and breathable as possible. The synthetic leather palm has two layers for durability. To make sure they stay secure, TLD included a Velcro closure strap.

SE Gear sets

The SE gear from Troy Lee Designs is very similar to their SE Air gear except it is a little less breathable and a fraction heavier. This is typically chosen by off-road riders where motocross riders prefer the Air version.

Jersey:

The SE jersey is designed to be comfortable breathable and durable. It makes use of multiple grades of polyester as well as leather and stretchy materials. It has built in elbow pads as well as a gel print on the jersey tail to keep it from coming untucked. This is a great choice for riders who don’t need the airy feel that SE air gives.

Pants:

The SE pant is very similar to the SE Air pant. However the biggest difference is the SE does not include the mesh 500 denier polyester that makes the Air model feel so breathable. The SE pant is better suited to riders who aren’t riding in extreme heat, or enduro riders as it tends to be a bit more durable.

Gloves:

The SE glove is loved by a lot of riders and for good reason. It feels natural to wear, and looks great. The body is made of spandex and the cuff is the slip on style so there is no Velcro to worry about. You can tell a lot of thought went into this glove.

GP Air gear sets

The GP Air dirt bike gear set is all about being as light and breathable as possible. You will be thankful for this set of gear on a hot day.

Jersey:

The GP air jersey is the most lightweight and breathable jersey that Troy Lee Designs makes. It consists of vented paneling and mesh all around. The non-existent feeling is similar to that of Fox’s FLEXAIR jersey.

Pants:

The GP air pant is similar to the jersey in the sense that it is also the most light and breathable pant in TLD’s line. There is also vented paneling and mesh all around the pant. In some key areas they have also included a stretch material to help with comfort and fit. Again this pant is perfect for riding in the intense summer heat.

GP Motocross Gear Sets

The GP gear set is TLD’s entry level set. It is very versatile for the price.

Jersey:

The GP jersey is lightweight and relatively breathable. It is comfortable as well. It does not feature the same performance that you can expect from the SE set, but for the price, it really is an awesome jersey.

Pants:

Troy Lee Designs’ GP pant matches the jersey well as it is lightweight and well-priced. It features a nice articulated fit which gives a good feel when riding. This pant also holds up to wear remarkably. Nothing to complain about in this entry level offering.

Gloves:

The GP gloves offer the most protection out of any glove that Troy Lee Designs makes. There is a thinly padded synthetic leather palm as well as biofoam on top to protect your hands.

Unlike a lot of lightweight gear, the Lite jersey isn’t entirely mesh. Instead it features a multiple panel makeup with mesh placed around in strategic locations such as the shoulders and sides. There are also laser cut perforations in places to help disperse even more heat. The Lite jersey really is a special, hot weather jersey.

Jersey:

This jersey is quite simple for a mid-range jersey. However, its nice fit makes it worth the price. It also looks like a top end model.

Pants:

The Elite pant has nice pre shaped knees to keep riding comfortable. It is not the most breathable of motocross pants, but feels like it will hold up to a lot. This is a good pant for those who like to ride for fun almost every day.

Syncron/Syncron Air Gear Set

The Syncron and Syncron Air groups offer entry level gear sets that are both fairly priced, and breathable.

Jersey:

These jerseys are very similar to most other entry level motocross jerseys. However, they do seem to have a bit nicer of a fit than a lot of cheap options. The Air models are very breathable and weigh almost nothing.

Pants:

Despite these pants being entry level, they truly feel like a racing pant. The pre-shaped knees offer a great fit and the overall design is durable just like the other options from Answer.

O’neal Dirt Bike Gear 2018

O’neal Gear Sets 2018

Hardwear Dirt Bike Gear Set

Hardwear is Oneal’s premium dirt bike gear line. It is well suited for even the most aggressive of riders.

Jersey:

The Hardwear jersey is a 100% ventilated free feeling jersey. It is impressive how lightweight it is when you pick it up. This is one of those jerseys you can ride in all day without feeling burdened by it.

Pants:

These pants are a solid top of the line option. There are lighter pants out there, but wearing these makes you seem like you don’t need anything lighter. The knees are ergonomically shaped and there is even bum padding for those times where you need to sit down.

Mayhem Motocross Gear Set

Mayham is a mid-priced gear group but to be honest it is more like an entry level set compared to the other companies we have been looking at.

Jersey:

This jersey is pretty simple. It features a moisture wicking fabric chassis and fits quite loosely. I would say that it is more of a relaxed fit than an athletic fit.

Pants:

The Mayham pant really stands out thanks to its interesting waist adjustment system. The pant is quite durable and features removable EVA hip pads which a lot of companies aren’t including nowadays. It is a good middle of the range option, but is not as well ventilated as a lot of others.

Element Gear Set

Element gear is a little on the heavier side. However, the price is awesome so if you aren’t a serious racer this may fit the bill.

Jersey:

This jersey is nothing too special. It is a baggy fit which doesn’t suit me but some riders enjoy. There are also elbow pads sewn in which adds a bit of abrasion resistance.

Pants:

Considering the price. I feel like this pant far outdoes the jersey. It is relatively breathable and has an ergonomic fit. There is also removable hip pads like with the Mayham set.

Ultra-Lite LE 75 Dirt Bike Gear Set

The Ultra-Lite LE 75 motocross gear draws inspiration from the history of motocross. The gear is not that technical but an awesome tribute to the sport we all love.

Jersey:

This jersey features sewn in elbow pads. The overall construction is solid and the mesh adds a lot of breathability.

Pants:

Heavy duty is the first thing that comes to mind when you see this pant. It has a nice adjustable belt style waist and lots of room for knee braces. However, it is not the most free feeling pant by any means.

Moose Dirt Bike Gear 2018

Moose Gear Sets 2018

Sahara Motocross Gear Set

Sahara dirt bike gear is priced a little below most competitors’ high end lines. It isn’t as advanced as some of the others, but it doesn’t miss out on any of the essentials.

Jersey:

The jersey is made mesh polyester so it is extremely airy and cool to ride in. It has a relatively athletic fit. This jersey will suit riders who sweat a lot.

Pants:

The pant is made with polyester just like the jersey. It features a highly adjustable waist which is nice for those who struggle with finding a good fitting pant. It is also quite affordable compared to other high end offerings.

M1 Gear set

The M1 line is similar to the Sahara line with a few changes and a minor price drop.

Jersey:

The M1 jersey is made to fit just like the Sahara jersey. However, the polyester used for this model is only semi-ventilated rather than being mesh. This means it is better suited to riders who don’t struggle with the heat as much.

Pants:

This pant fits the same as the Sahara pant. The different being that the chassis is made with high denier polyester rather than ventilated polyester.

Qualifier Dirt Bike Gear Set

The qualifier dirt bike gear sets are entry level and basic. There is nothing extra special to them, however they do feel like they would hold up to abuse well.

Jersey:

The jersey has a loose fit which is designed to give riders a feeling of freedom. The spandex neck and cuffs are comfortable and a nice touch.

Pants:

The pants are very similar to the other offerings from Moose. They weigh a little bit more but that is expected as it is the entry level line. The badges offer some protection against roost as well.

Final Thoughts about 2018 Dirt Bike Gear

Wow, that was a lot of dirt bike gear! Here is the thing, after going through all of that, I have no idea what is technically my favorite. Almost all of the top of the line gear ranges make me want to order a set of my own! Let’s face it, the best set of motocross gear will totally depend on your riding environment. Not only that, but you have to love the style of it. If you feel good in the gear, then you will perform to the best of your ability. However, there are of course a few tips I can give you to help choose your set.

Firstly, get the fit right! Most of these companies have similar fits, but not identical. After you have a good fit, focus on what you care about. If you want something lightweight and breathable, there are plenty of options for you! If you want pure durability, there is a gear set for that too. Match your wants to a set of gear and you won’t be disappointed! Finally, stay within your budget. Lots of mid and low range gear sets still offer great performance. Having a sweet set of gear but no gas in your dirt bike doesn’t make for a fun ride!
